Math and Emotion (Tuning in again… Part 21)

Manchmal geschieht es, dass ich eine Band oder Musikrichtung neu entdecke, die wie ein Blitz einschlagen. So erging es mir vor einigen Wochen mit Klangstabil, denen ich zum ersten Mal auf dem Maschinenfest in Krefeld Anfang Oktober begegnet bin. Sie waren so wohltuend anders als die restlichen Noise/Industrial-Acts, von deren Geräuschdarbietungen ich teilweise fast Zahnschmerzen bekam. Ganz anders dann Klangstabil, deren Stücke sich durch zurückgenommene, ruhige Vokaleinlagen genauso wie Synthpop-Anleihen auszeichneten. Wie sich herausstellte, war das, was mir so gut gefallen hatte, dem aktuellen Album der beiden, “Math & Emotion”, entnommen; ein Album, in das ich mich sofort beim ersten Hören verliebt habe (eine schöne Besprechung des Albums gibt es beim  Medienkonverter). Meine Favoriten hier sind “Lauf, lauf!” sowie das erste Stück des Albums, “Math & Emotion - The Square Root Of One” (Youtube).

What the Klangstabil artists say about their new album:

“the idea of producing a concept album about chess arose in the summer of 2005 when boris may started cultivating an interest in the game to find a way to overcome his growing mental laziness. maurizio lanco also liked the idea of turning chess into a musical concept. chessboards and relevant literature were aquired so as to get into to the spirit of the game. originally, the title of this album was planned to be”mindchess”. later on, it was transformed into ‘math & emotion’ because this title reflects the way klangstabil learned how to play the game. “the concept ‘math & emotion’ became wider and overstepped the limits of a mere game of chess. it was projected on interhuman behavioral patterns in the everyday game of life.” (boris may)

the music on this album seems easily accessible, resuming the path klangstabil has been on for years. the first impression to the expectant listener might be undiluted dark electro-based pop, but this isn’t an inaccurate evaluation, as they call it ‘klangpop’. massive synth surfaces, pulsing sequencer patterns and intense vocals intertwined with precise computerized drum beats add up to memorable tunes. on closer examination oblique details become visible: elaborated rhythmical work, hidden sound fragments and the specific tension klangstabil are well-known for - all aided by significant lyrics in german, english and italian. the more you engage in ‘math & emotion’ the more the deepness of this release will develop - just like the seemingly simple game of chess and the game of life.”

Kürbis mal anders

Schon lange nicht mehr so gelacht, mitten im Supermarkt. Der Grund:

 ”Gruseliges Design, der Duft von Kürbis und die leuchtenden Kürbisköpfe machen Ihr Bad zur Halloweenzone. Ein Spaß, den niemand vergisst.” Da ich mein Handy zum Knipsen nicht dabei hatte (und, naja, weil das Kind in mir durchkam…. ‘will haaaben!’) hab ich das Teil gekauft… 8 dreilagige Rollen Halloween-Klopapier. Mit schaurigem Kürbisduft.

Ich hab immer noch Muskelkater vom Lachen.

Einwohnerzentralregister durchs Hintertürchen: die Steuer-ID ist da

….oder auch: die Steuer-ID is was für’n A….

Gestern erhielt ich die seit langem angekündigte Steueridentifikationsnummer, eine 11-stellige Zahl, unter der das Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (BZSt) meine Kerndaten speichert. Noch bis 20 Jahre nach meinem Tod wird alles, was im Zusammenhang mit dieser einen Nummer auftaucht, eindeutig mit mir in Zusammenhang gebracht werden können, denn die Steuer-ID ist eine Personenkennziffer. Die Nummer wird jedem Deutschen bei seiner Geburt zugeteilt.

Die Steuer-ID (aucht TIN, Tax Identification Number, genannt) erstellt das BZSt auf Grundlage der dem Einwohnermeldeamt am Hauptwohnsitz bekannten Daten. Somit erfolgt, wenn auch indirekt, bei der Einführung der ID-Nummern gleich ein Abgleich mit dem Melderegister.

Auch wenn das BZSt auf seiner Webseite direkt in der Überschrift beteuert “Daten ausschließlich für ein einfacheres Besteuerungsverfahren” zu verwenden, liegt es auf der Hand, dass so ein umfassendes Einwohnerzentralregister große Begehrlichkeiten weckt - nochmal: jeder, vom Wickelkind bis zum Greis, erhält eine Nummer, durch die er eindeutig zu identifizieren ist. Sei es auf Seiten anderer staatlicher Stellen oder der Wirtschaft, viele würden gerne ein Auge auf den Schatz, den das BZSt da nun hortet, werfen. So ist in dem § 139b AO (Abgabenordnung) praktischerweise auch gleich ein Absatz enhalten, nach welchem die unter der Identifikationsnummer gespeicherten Merkmale genutzt werden können, um “Daten, die auf Grund eines Gesetzes oder nach über- und zwischenstaatlichem Recht entgegenzunehmen sind, an die zuständigen Stellen weiterleiten zu können”.

Was kann man also machen, wenn man nicht mit der ID einverstanden ist? Zeter und Mordio schreien, anschließend Plakate malen und durch die Gegend tragen, und was der üblichen Reaktionen mehr sind…  weniger rebellische Zeitgenossen können ein Brieflein an das BZSt schicken. “Hallo BZSt, blöde Idee, das mit der Steuer-ID!” Ein Musterschreiben diesen Inhalts findet sich bei der Humanistischen Union. Diese hat auch eine Musterklage eingereicht. Für den Schreiber eines Ich-bin-dagegen-Briefs ändert sich natürlich nichts daran dass er eine Nummer in der Datenbank ist. Allerdings wird eine Masse an Unmutsäußerungen eher zur Kenntnis genommen als die der üblichen drei, vier Bedenkenträger.

Social pain vs. physical pain

 

The proverb ’sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you’ has been a comfort to generations of bullied children.

But now psychologists have found that the reverse may in fact be the case, with the pain of hurt feelings far outlasting memories of physical pain.

They asked volunteers to recall times when they had suffered physical pain in the past five years and also when they had suffered what the study called ’social pain’ - unpleasant emotional interactions such as being betrayed or left out.

The participants wrote accounts of the experiences and then underwent psychological testing to compare how much pain they felt then and now.

The analysis revealed that the pain caused by an unpleasant social event remained consistently more vivid in the mind than that from a physical injury.

Bibliothek des Jahres 2008: Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Der Preis “Bibliothek des Jahres” des Deutschen Bibliotheksverbandes und der ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius wird in diesem Jahr zum neunten Mal verliehen. Die Auszeichnung 2008 geht an die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in München. Sie erhält den mit 30.000 Euro ausgestatteten einzigen nationalen Bibliothekspreis.

Den zweiten Platz belegt die Stadtbücherei Wittlich (Homepage), den dritten Platz die Schulbibliothek der Gemeinschaftsgrundschule Hackenberg in Remscheid (Homepage).

Unter den 11 nominierten Bibliotheken war auch die erst kürzlich neu eröffnete Mediothek in Krefeld, über die man auch hier auf meinem Blog mehr erfahren kann.

Nominations are now open for the Worst EU Lobbying Awards 2008

It’s your chance to name and shame the perpetrators of some of the worst lobbying tactics in Brussels.

This year’s awards are being made for two categories:

1. The Worst EU Lobbying Award – nominations should be made for any lobbying campaign which relies on deception, misleading information or other improper lobbying tactics to influence decision making within the EU.

2. The Worst Conflict of Interest Award – nominations sought for the MEP, European Commissioner or other member of EU staff whose background, other jobs or liaisons with special interest lobbyists raise the most serious concerns about their ability to act impartially and in the public interest.

Nominations can be submitted online at http://www.worstlobby.eu/2008/_en until Friday 12th September 2008.

From the nominations, shortlists of top nominees in each category will be selected, followed by public voting between Monday 13th October and Sunday 30th November. The Awards Ceremony will take place in Brussels in December.

It is not “yet another web comic”, as I thought when I stumbled upon it the first time. Well, to a certain degree of course it is… However, after having read all the strips in one go (or mmh… in two days) I was addicted.

The strips are not published regularly, but there are regularly new strips (which makes it even more exciting when you urgently want to know how it will go on with the story but you don’t know when it will be - but you won’t miss a new one when you subscribe to the RSS. Haha, clever).
